Mirboo North Shire Hall Upgrade
Proposal – Conduct an inspection and create a condition report on Mirboo North Shire Hall stage drapes, tracking and associated hardware and structure
Challenge – To ensure that a circa 1938 stage was safe and compliant by upgrading the existing drapery and tracking with modern alternatives whilst retaining the period charm of the venue. On inspection, we found that the old drapes were manufactured from non-compliant fabrics which represented a fire risk. The existing tracking was not sufficient for theatrical use and needed upgrading. Also, some structural elements were not adequately supported and represented an immediate safety hazard.
Solution – Theatre Star provided a full report with suggested upgrades and associated costs. On acceptance, we proceeded to upgrade the curtains to durable IFR fabrics including our Ultra IFR Velvet for the front curtains and valance, and our Infinity IFR black wool for the stage masking. Structural issues were addressed and new heavy theatre tracking was installed.
Outcome – Theatre Star creative consultants redesigned the new front valance in keeping with the period elements of the venue. The result is one of the most visually striking regional halls in Victoria and a functional and safe venue for the district.
Footnote – South Gippsland Council contacted us with concerns after being approached by companies who suggested that they should have their existing stage curtains regularly cleaned and treated for flame retardancy (An expensive process which does not ensure compliancy). Theatre Star installed Inherently Flame Retardant fabrics which will NEVER require any expensive treatments and rarely require any major cleaning.
