Royal Melbourne Showgrounds, Exhibition Hall
Project – Exhibition Hall, Room dividing drape and tracking system including storage areas.
Proposal – Theatre Star were approached by Brand Architects to assist with the design and installation of 2 x large room dividing drapes runs to provide for reduced mode application and to disappear when full open mode is required.
Challenge
- 2 x Tracking runs of 20+ mt each were to curve around various 90 degree bends into tight curtain storage areas when not employed.
- The ceiling of the hall dropped down at one end so variable height drapes were required to overlap for continuity of drape run.
- Provide a durable fabric which allowed for acoustic and light control
Solution – Theatre Star worked closely with Brand Architects to ensure that the drapes could be successfully negotiated around the various curves and would fit into the allocated storage areas. Heavy duty tracking was curved by us to fit precisely where required. Lockable master carriers were used to ensure drapes stayed in place and steel bobbins were used for extra strength. A large quantity of 7+ mt drop Black Infinity Wool drapes were prepared in our Melbourne workroom
Outcome – This ambitious curtain storage concept was an architectural success and provided the venue with a unique room dividing system which allowed for various modes, or for numerous events to occur concurrently.
The system could be employed using minimal staff and it stored away seamlessly to open up the entire venue. The commonsense approach by the architects to discuss and workshop the design aspects with Theatre Star ensured the ultimate success of the project.
