Regent Theatre Dunedin New Zealand
Proposal – To create a feature main front curtain for this NZ landmark theatre
Challenge – To design and create a suitable, functional curtain in keeping with the décor and historic charm of the venue, whilst providing a light and acoustic barrier between the audience and the stage. The eventual challenge was the enormous size and weight of the single piece drape.
Solution – We met with a delegation of theatre management and technical staff in our Melbourne workroom to discuss design ideas and to present our suggestions.
We examined historical photos of the venue and created our own ambitious design in keeping with looks. We selected our Ultra IFR Velvet (dark red) for its durability and IFR finish (Compliant with NZ Standards for the life of the drape). The drape was manufactured in our Melbourne workroom and test hung in a large local venue before shipping out to New Zealand. Special techniques including custom tail battens, side guide rings and special tensioning weights were applied to reduce the ‘hourglassing’ effect of such a heavy drape.
At 200+ kg, this was one of the heaviest drapes ever manufactured in Australia, in a single piece. A special crate was constructed for shipping.
Outcome – The finished result was absolutely stunning and the drape is now a treasured feature of the Regent Theatre.
